James webb Space Telescope is known the replacement of Hubble. But it is the advancement of hubble. Webb is the scientific successor. Hubble gave a way to look the universe at longer wavelengths. It motivated Webb to "go beyond".
Webb telescope can be compared with Hubble by the following characteristics
- Wavelength
- Size
- Orbit
Wavelength

EM Spectrum and satellites. |
It is the measure difference between Hubble and Webb telescope.Webb having 4 types of cameras and using infrared wavelengths of 0.6 to 28 micrometer. Whereas Hubble is using ultraviolet and visible primarily of 0.1 to 0.8 micrometer (shorter wavelengths).

Galaxies and stars are situated at a large distance. Light coming from these objects get more redshifted. ultraviolet and visible light shifts towards the infrared wavelengths. So, using of Infrared cameras get more detailed image than others. This is why Webb telescope takes a beautiful picture.
Size
Webb have a mirror about 3 times greater than the Hubble telescope. The primary mirror of Webb telescope is 6.5 m of diameter. Hubble have a primary mirror of 2.4 m of diameter. The field of view of Webb is 15 times greater than the Hubble.
Orbit
Hubble is orbiting earth with an altitude about 570 km from earth. It was launched by space shuttle. Because it is easy to assemble in the orbit around earth.
Webb will orbit the sun 1.5 million kilometers (1 million miles) away from the Earth at what is called the second Lagrange point or L2. (Note that these graphics are not to scale.) |
But in case of Webb, it is not orbiting around earth. Webb places at a point called earth-sun L2 Langrage point. It is situated 1.5 million km away from earth. It was launched by Ariane-5 rocket.
